Ben Gurion International Airport

Ben Gurion International Airport Ben Gurion International Airport is the main aviation gateway of the State of Israel. The Airport serves the majority of passengers flying into and out of Israel.

The Airports Authority, which operates all Airports in Israel, has over recent years been contending with a constant increase in the number of passengers flying into Israel.

The Authority provided a quick fix to the problem of the increasing load at BGN, by adding grounds to the airport compound and installing technological systems, to temporarily increase the capacity of the Airport and improve service to the passenger.

And yet this was insufficient. The basic and ideal solution to the problem of capacity and service levels at the Airport is to be found in the overall plan to expand the existing airport, by establishing a new and modern passenger terminal, Terminal 3.

This will provide a solution to the growing number of passengers passing though the Airport each year, thus obtaining maximum benefit from the new terminal, that will serve tourism, industry and agricultural export.

History:

The first landing strips in the land of Israel were built by the Turks during the First World War, in 1917, at Tzemach in the north, at Ramle in the center and at Gaza in the south, to serve the bi plane fighter aircraft put at their disposal by the Germans.

The 30's
Since its establishment and to the present day, the airport has served as the main entrance and exit gateway for both the citizens and guests of the State of Israel.

The 40's
At the end of the war, civilian activities at the airport slowly returned to full volume and reached a peak.

The 50's
In 1950, Arkia airlines commenced operating internal flights from Lod to Eilat, Mahanayim and Haifa.

The 60's
Regular jet aircraft flights were inaugurated in April 1960, with BEA flights from London and Athens.

The 70's
The first Jumbo landed at the airport already in 1970.

The 80's
During the 80s, passenger traffic at the airport increased, the terminal building was expanded, a new control tower was built and the communications and RADAR installations were improved.

The 90's
At the beginning of the 90s, the airport witnessed the huge wave of immigration that arrived from the Soviet Union.
