Paphos International Airport

Paphos International Airport History

The rapid increase of air traffic at the two international airports of Larnaca and Paphos during the 1980΄s and 1990΄s led to the need for the expansion of the two airports. Consequently it was decided in 1988 to prepare masterplans for the construction of new terminal buildings, extension of runways and taxiways and of the airports facilities.

The French consulting firm SOFREAVIA undertook, after tenders, the preparation of masterplans and the final studies for both airports were submitted in May, 1991.

The French Consortium AEROPORTS DE PARIS/SOFREAVIA undertook also in 1993 the preparation of construction drawings and tender documents for the new Paphos Αirport to satisfy the movement of 2.0 million passengers per year in the first phase and 2.7 million passenger per year in the second phase:

The improvements include the following:

(i) New terminal building with car park area.

(ii) New control tower

(iii) Extension of the aircraft parking apron

The construction drawings for Paphos Airport satisfying two million passenger per year were completed in October, 1998 and those for Larnaca Airport to satisfy 6 million passenger per year in September, 1999.

Progress To-date:

After the completion of the designs, the Government decided to apply the method of B.O.T. (Build-Operate-Transfer) in the development of the airports. On 5th October, 2000, a contract was signed with the Consultants Pricewaterhouse Coopers to advise the Government on the matter and prepare the necessary studies and documentation. It is estimated that tenders will be invited at the beginning of 2002, from prequalified Joint Ventures to select one who will undertake the management and development of the Cyprus airports. The prequalification process began on 28 May, 2001 and ten consortiums submitted documents for prequalification. After evaluation five consortiums will be invited to submit detailed tenders for the Project at the beginning of 2002.
