Valencia Airport

Valencia Airport photo Since 1995 the number of passengers using Valencia Airport has more than doubled to 4,650,000 in 2005. This huge increase in passenger numbers can be explained by the introduction of a large number of low cost flights from the UK and Europe and a marked increase in the number of foreign property owners in Valencia and to the south along the Costa Blanca.

60% of all passengers arriving at Valencia Airport are from internal Spanish flights and the remaining 40% is mostly from other EU Countries such as the UK, Germany, Italy and France.

The Valencia Airport Terminal is spread out over 3 floors with the main activity for Arrivals and Departures taking place on the ground and 1st floors.

The Valencia Arrivals hall is on the ground floor and consist of 6 baggage reclaim areas. On this floor you will also find the main car hire companies and access to the buses and taxis.

The Valencia Airport Departures Hall is on the First Floor of the Terminal and in the departure lounge (after check in) you will find 8 or so shops in Valencia Airport selling a range of goods from newspapers in all languages to jewellerry, clothes and of course cigarettes, alcohol and perfume. There is also a VIP lounge in this area.

There are not any trains at Valencia Airport but the Valencia Airport buses run every 20 minutes from 0630am until 2345. The trip into the center of the City takes around 15 minutes and costs €1.

You will also be able to find the Valencia Airport Taxis just outside the arrival hall. There are always taxis waiting at the rank and the fare into the city center should be around €15 . If you feel like splashing out then why not book private Valencia transfers.

History

The establishment of Valencia Airport started with the Airport Act of 1927, which considered the construction of an aerodrome in the area as urgent. Its seaport was therefore equipped for seaplanes.

Initially, the site of the airport was to be the piece of land which separates La Albufera from the sea, providing the opportunity to use the facilities for both land aeroplanes and seaplanes. However, due to various obstacles, another site had to be found and finally it was decided to construct the airport in the area of Manises.

The formal opening of the aerodrome was in March 1933 and it achieved Customs airport status in September 1934. The first scheduled flight took place on 1st September 1934, with the opening of the Madrid-Valencia route.

Construction began for the first hard-surface runway – the 12/30 – in the summer of 1946, using a metal net covered with a layer of limestone on a base of steamrolled rock. Between 1948 and 1949, construction works began to surface runways 12/30 and 04/22 and to create a small parking platform.

In 1953, a road linking departure point 30 with the aircraft parking was built and the following year a taxi road parallel to 12/30 was constructed for military aviation.

In February 1958, the extension of the 12/30 runway and the tread at its northeastern end, with its corresponding stop areas, and the installation of an approach light system were approved.

In 1983, the new passenger terminal was opened to replace the one built in the mid-sixties. The most innovative component of the new building was the use of solar energy, via solar panels.
