Queenstown Airport

Queenstown AirportHistory Queenstown Airport was first licensed in August 1935, with the first commercial operation by Popeye Lucas in the early 1950's.

Regular services were subsequently developed by New Zealand Tourist Travel & in 1968, Mount Cook Airline commenced scheduled operations with HS748 aircraft on a newly sealed runway of 1341 metres.

The first jet aircraft (BAe146) was introduced in 1989.

Extensions to the runway in 1995 & 1998 enabled fully laden jet aircraft including Boeing 737 to operate direct to any New Zealand port as well as return Trans Tasman services to Sydney, Brisbane & Melbourne.

An overlay of the full 1911 metres of runway was completed March 2001.
