The first
inhabitant of Husavik, and indeed of Iceland, is said to have
been a Swede by the name of Garth Svavarsson. Having circumnavigated Iceland
in 870, he spent the winter in the bay here and called it House Bay –
Husavik. The following Spring he returned to Norway, leaving behind one
of his men - “Night Traveller” – remembered in the name
of the bay - Nattfaravik - in the Mountains of Kinn, opposite Husavik.
Husavik today
Husavik was amalgamated with the rural council of Reykjahrepp in June
2003 and has since been known as Husavikurb'r. Total inhabitants number
just under 2,500 people. Husavikurb'r has developed into a popular destination
for tourists, with around 80,000 visitors a year. A third of these guests
come from overseas and most of them come in small groups rather than large
organised or package tours. One of the biggest attractions is, of course,
whale-watching and Husavik has frequently been called the “Whale-watching
capital of Europe”. Around 28,000 visitors a year sail on Skajalfanda
Bay to see whales in their natural surroundings.
