Grafenwoehr Military Airfield (AAF)

The 100th Area Support Group was established with headquarters located at Grafenwoehr, Germany, on October 1, 1991 as part of the U.S. Army Europe Community Plan.

The 100th ASG mission and role is to provide quality base operations and support the 7th Army Training Command, the Grafenwoehr Training Area, the Hohenfels Training Area, the Combat Maneuver Training Center, and tenant units and activities.

The 100th ASG originally included four base support battalions (BSBs): the 281st in Vilseck, the 282nd in Hohenfels, the 283rd in Wildflecken, and the 409th in Grafenwoehr. In 1993 the 416th Area Support Team (AST) in Nuremberg was added. Additionally the ASG oversaw ASTs in the German communities of Bindlach and Amberg.

With the end of the Cold War, USAREUR began reducing forces in Germany and closed facilities and communities as units returned to the United States or were inactivated. In 1992 the Area Support Teams in Amberg and Bindlach were closed as part of the USAREUR wide draw down. In 1994 the 283rd Base Support Battalion inactivated and the Wildflecken Training Area returned to German control. Also in 1994, the 281st BSB and 416th BSB were re-designated as Area Support Teams. The Nuremberg AST closed in late 1995, and the Vilseck AST was incorporated into the 409th BSB when their headquarters moved to Vilseck in 1996.

In its short history, the 100th ASG has compiled an enviable record of success at both the USAREUR and Department of the Army levels of the Army Communities of Excellence Program (ACOE).

From 1992 to the present, the communities within the 100th ASG have won over $4,000,000 in ACOE funds, clearly demonstrating their skill in providing excellent support to the units and soldiers in Bavaria.

While providing quality support to the 7th Army Training Command and supported units, the 100th helped deploy combat and combat support elements from Germany into the Balkans during Operations Joint Endeavor and Joint Guard. Throughout this ongoing NATO mission, the 100th ASG supported soldiers, families and civilians with the highest quality of life standards and activities.
