The town is characterised by its historic buildings which contribute to its distinctive feel. Everywhere you go you are confronted by 1,000 years of history – on the streets and in the squares, in the old monasteries and churches and in the town houses and forts. A walk through Krems and Stein is always worth it. And afterwards you can relax and enjoy the open-air cafes, restaurants and taverns. Krems has one of the most beautiful and lively pedestrian areas in Austria where shopping in the old town becomes a real experience.Krems has its own festival which attracts thousands of visitors each year who come to sample the wide programme of events and the diverse range of music and theatre. The town has also become an established centre for contemporary art and culture – for example, it is has the Krems art quarter, home to the Caricature and Literature Museum and the art gallery. Krems’ gallery – the biggest in Austria – has hosted many renowned exhibitions of 19th and 20th century art.A wide variety of firms have also set up offices at the town’s business and industry park, built on a 100 hectare green-field site. The RIZ-Krems business start-up centre has set a leading example for other companies wishing to move to Krems through its work with young, innovative firms to create a successful cluster of biotech businesses. Training, research and practical work are tied together in a perfect symbiosis and it is no coincidence that firms are moving to Krems – the town which offers science, research and education in one place. In such a high-achieving environment fitness and well-being are important commodities and also provide an excellent balance to studying.
