Nyngan is located on the Bogan River at the junction of the Mitchell and Barrier Highways, an ideal rest point for the traveller. Nyngan is one of the state's wealthiest pastoral districts with wool, wheat and cattle as its primary produce. Originally gazetted as a "Reserve for Water" in 1865, the name Nyngan means "long pond of water" in the Aboriginal Language.

Nyngan is situated 575 km from Sydney at the junction of the Mitchell and Barrier Highways. The Mitchell Highway extends west from Sydney to Dubbo, through Nyngan to Bourke and then into Western Queensland.

The Barrier Highway is part of the main route linking Brisbane to Adelaide (and further west). A daily coach service between Sydney and Adelaide passes through Nyngan and Hermidale.

The Nyngan airport is situated close to the town from which three flights to Sydney via Dubbo are conducted each week. The airport is also used extensively for charter and private flights and is capable of handling Hercules size aircraft.
