Ballina is surrounded by water. Central Ballina itself is an island, nestling between the twin arms of the Richmond River and North Creek. Serviced by a modern jet airport, there are regular air services from Sydney and Brisbane. Taxi services connect to the town - it's about a 5 minute ride from the airport to the centre of Ballina.

Owned and operated by Ballina Shire Council, the Airport is located within 5kms of the Ballina CBD and a quick but scenic road trip from Byron Bay (20 mins) and Lismore (30 mins). Within a couple of hours from Sydney, you can be relaxing on uncrowded beaches or exploring world heritage listed National Parks and rainforests.

Last year over 120,000 passengers travelled through Ballina Airport . The Airport caters for all types of air traffic, including domestic flights, air freight/courier services and general aviation.

The impressive Airport Terminal Building provides visitors and travellers the convenience of a modern capital city terminal. Facilities include:

In 2005 Ballina Airport was renamed Ballina Byron Gateway Airport in a bid to attract more people to the area.

A master plan for an upgrade and expansion of the terminal has been drawn up and may be constructed with a new glass facade facing the apron and runway as well as a new drop-off/pick-up area and multiple interior changes. This is due to the increase in numbers since the introduction of jet services by Jetstar and Virgin Blue. The upgrade will in the future involve a taxiway being built for the runway and many more facilities for the airport.

Airline Services

Virgin Blue, QantasLink and Regional Express operate comprehensive daily flight schedules between Sydney and Ballina, providing friendly and efficient check-in and baggage handling services.
